(CLEVELAND, OH, 10/5/23) – On Wednesday, September 27th, the Cleveland chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) hosted the leadership of several chapters of the Muslim Student Association (MSA) from local universities for a special dinner at the CAIR office.

The gathering kicked off with introductions from all of the attendees and an opening prayer by the president of Cleveland State University’s MSA, Afnan Haque.

Haque noted the importance of the gathering and how efforts were made in past by the local MSAs to gather via Zoom but plans fell through due to scheduling conflicts. He continued to pray for the blessings for CAIR and the work of the community.

A presentation of CAIR-Ohio’s mission, vision and services was given by Interim Executive Director, Faten Odeh. Odeh expressed the unique work of CAIR to preserve the rights of Muslim Americans and highlighted the fact that there are efforts in the State House to do away with diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives such as organizations like MSAs and courses that teach diverse perspectives.

Chance Zurub, CAIR-Ohio’s staff attorney, explained the type of legal cases that come through and the relationship between advocacy legal work at CAIR.

Gia Hamed, CAIR-Ohio’s intern, and Arselan Rekhif, CAIR-Ohio’s administrative assistant presented a collaboration opportunity for the student organization: Elevating Rights, Inspiring Unity

Hamed said, “The older generation before us put in the efforts to establish CAIR and preserve our rights and now it is our turn to take on the responsibility to keep it going.”

At the conclusion of the dinner, Odeh expressed to the attendees, “This CAIR office is your CAIR office. I want to see you in here and support your efforts on campus and in the community. I hope to see you all stopping by in your free time, lending a hand and keeping us connected. My hope for this gathering was not to just inform you about CAIR and let you know we are here for you but also to connect all of you together so that we can network, learn from one another and support each other.”

The dinner was attended by the leadership of the MSAs from Case Western Reserve University, Baldwin Wallace University, University of Mount Union, John Carroll University, the University of Akron, Cleveland State University, and Kent State University.

(CLEVELAND, OH, 9/21/23) – On Monday, September 11th, the Cleveland chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) joined Global Cleveland and other local faith leaders for the United Church of Christ’s virtual interfaith service for Global Cleveland’s Welcoming Week 2023.

This virtual interfaith service was one of the many events of Global Cleveland’s Welcoming Week 2023, where the aim was to celebrate and acknowledge international individuals who reside within Cleveland and to celebrate the diversity within our communities. The leaders present represented many faiths ranging from Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Buddhism.

Faith leaders at the service were Dr. Karen Thompson, the General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ; Rabbi Scott Roland, on the Cleveland Board of Rabbis; and Faten Odeh, the Interim Executive Director of CAIR-Ohio, Cleveland.

During the meeting, Dr.Thompson stated,” I am thankful that Cleveland has been a place where people can find a new home… this is a community who understands what it means to love and care.”

Interim Executive Director of CAIR-Ohio, Cleveland, Faten Odeh brought her Muslim voice. She mentioned her own struggles from being a well-liked student who sang the national anthem at the school talent show to being viewed as an “other” for her faith.

“Being the only Muslim in my school during this time was a challenge and it placed a heavy burden on me at such a young age to have to be the one to explain and defend the faith of Islam,” Odeh said.

She continued to say that Global Cleveland’s Welcoming Week and the interfaith service reminded her of the verse from the Quran from Surat al-Hujurat,” O humanity, Indeed We created you from a male and a female and made you into peoples and tribes so that you may get to know one another.”

Under the leadership of Faten Odeh, Interim Executive Director of CAIR-Cleveland & Northern Ohio, and with the collective dedication of the organization’s members, CAIR-OHIO implemented a multifaceted strategy to educate and engage the community on Issue 1.

CAIR-Cleveland created an educational video urging people to vote “No” on August 8. They also sent out WhatsApp messages and created social media posts on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to explain and remind people to vote.

Every Friday leading up to the election, CAIR-Cleveland set up informational tables at local mosques including the West Cleveland Muslim Association, Islamic Center of Cleveland and the Islamic Association of Akron and Kent where they were facilitating voter registration and providing comprehensive insights into Issue 1.

They also mailed more than 6.5 thousand Get-Out-the-Vote postcards urging individuals to participate in the Special Election on August 8th and make their voices heard.

(CLEVELAND, OH, 8/17/23) – On Thursday, August 11, the Cleveland chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) joined the Northeast Ohio Voter Advocates (NOVA) and community members for a meeting with Cuyahoga County Corrections Center Jail (CCCCJ) administrators to discuss incarceree voter rights and procedures.

The meeting was initiated in preparation for the November 2023 election. According to NOVA, volunteers have registered voters in the Cuyahoga County Jail since 2010. Voter registration has been offered in this jail since 2000 and between 2010 and 2018, NOVA was permitted to do in-person registration without requiring detained voters to sign up in advance.

In 2020, due to the pandemic and public health concerns, NOVA switched to video visits in lieu of in-person registration and the turnout declined significantly. In 2022, NOVA was allowed to resume in-person registration, but voters had to sign up in advance. According to NOVA data, this reduced turnout by 50%. In 2022, 58 people voted from the jail compared to 115 in 2018.

NOVA and CAIR-Ohio, Cleveland along with community members met with jail administrators to discuss ways to increase voter participation and voter information amongst the inmate voter population.

Interim Executive Director of CAIR-Ohio, Cleveland, Faten Odeh said, “As a civil rights organization, ensuring every voter has the ability to exercise their right to vote and access to the information in order to make informed decisions for our democracy is an essential value of CAIR.”

NOVA board president, Meredith Hellmer, lead organizer Maddie Haughton, volunteer Barbara Marburger, CAIR-Ohio, Cleveland’s Faten Odeh and community voter rights advocate Katrice Williams met with Associate Warden Jennifer Frame, Warden Michelle Henry, Chief of Corrections Dale Soltis, and Sheriff Harold Pretel.

NOVA board president Meredith Hellmer said: “I was pleased that the Sheriff took time to come.”

(CLEVELAND, OH, 6/26/23) – On Friday, May 12th, students from Cleveland State University, Case Western Reserve University, John Carroll University and Kent State University’s Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) organized a fundraising event for the Palestinian Children Relief Fund’s (PCRF) Medical Missions charity, while also providing a platform to showcase the richness of Palestinian culture and people.

The event was held at Case Western Reserve University’s Linsalata Alumni Center. The night was filled with entertainment such as a performance of the traditional dabke dance, henna artists, local Palestinian comedian Tarek Muhammad, and a bazaar dedicated to supporting local Palestinian business owners. The event raised more than $2,500 in one night.

Many notable organizations attended this culture night, such as the Cleveland and Northern Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Cleveland), PCRF’s Steve Sosebee, Jewish Voices for Peace, Cleveland Peace Action, Al-Awda, and the Islamic Society of Akron and Kent.

CAIR-Cleveland’s Interim Executive Director Faten Odeh joined the event, in support of the students and their mission. Odeh emphasized the importance of freedom of speech, as CAIR’s mission is to uphold principles of freedom.

“As a Palestinian it makes me so happy to see people celebrate the Palestinian culture despite the generations of us going through the Palestinian diaspora. No matter where we are or how long it has been since we have set foot in our country, we still remember,” Odeh stated.

(CLEVELAND, OH – 6/20/2023) – On Saturday, June 3rd, the Cleveland and Northern Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) attended Masjid Bilal’s 40th anniversary commemorating its construction in 1983. Masjid Bilal represents the first mosque to be designed and built in the United States by an African American community.

The anniversary was celebrated with a proclamation from the City of Cleveland, presented by the current councilwoman for Ward 7, Stephanie Howse, in which the City acknowledges the historic development of the mosque and establishes support for future endeavors.

“Masjid Bilal has served as a good sounding board for the diverse Muslims in Cleveland for CAIR and has always uplifted the work we do in civil rights and helping empower our Muslim community. I hope we will continue to strengthen our relationship, InshAllah.” … “I felt so humbled to be one of the guest speakers at this historically significant masjid where renowned names such as Imam W. D. Mohammad exist,” said Faten Odeh, Interim Executive Director of the Cleveland chapter of CAIR-Ohio.

The leaders of Masjid Bilal’s community were also recognized for their support, receiving certificates of appreciation in acknowledgement of their dedication. Included within these leaders was Senior Imam Shafeek Sabir as well as Imam Ivan Nassar and Imam Ahmed Saeed. All three were acknowledged for their roles as founding members of Masjid Bilal and celebrated as current Imams. Also recognized were community trailblazers Brenda Shakoor, and Justine Parker. Both Shakoor and Parker are founding members for the Clyde Rahman Community Center, a nonprofit focused on providing healthcare for the elderly African American community. Omar Qadir, a longtime community member for over 50 years, was acknowledged for his dedication as the chief photographer and as a member of security. Mabel Mohammed, a matriarch, and member of the community for over 50 years, was also recognized for her dedication to supporting the women in the community. A special recognition was accepted on behalf of the family of Nina Mohammed, who unfortunately passed away on the day of the anniversary. Nina Mohammed was a long-time advocate for the community, organizing and cooking large events held by the Mosque and serving as an inspiration for all members of Masjid Bilal.

Masjid Bilal is also home to the Salaam Clinic, which provides free healthcare services to uninsured and underprivileged children and adults in Northeast Ohio.

(CLEVELAND, OH – 5/25/2023) – Interim Executive Director of the Cleveland chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Cleveland) Faten Odeh joined “Team Palestine” on May 20 at the 46th annual Cleveland Marathon.

Odeh joined Cleveland-area Palestine advocates, including the Cleveland Palestine Taskforce and the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund (PCRF) to form Team Palestine, which has participated in the marathon for the last few years to bring awareness to the suffering of the Palestinian people and to raise money for children with medical needs in Palestine and the broader Middle East.

Team Palestine braved the rain along with nearly 10,000 other runners as the race began.  The race featured a Kids Run, 5K, 10K, Half and Full Marathon. For a full listing of results, visit: clevelandmarathon.com/2023-results.

“I was honored to run for Team Palestine and raise awareness for such a great cause, the Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. I was worried about finishing the race as it was raining, and my feet were soaking wet. When I remembered that I was running for all the Palestinian children suffering under the Israeli apartheid government’s occupation of Palestine, I was inspired to keep going,” said Faten Odeh, Interim Executive Director of the Cleveland chapter of CAIR-Ohio.

(CLEVELAND, OH – 6/23/2023) – Faten Odeh, the Interim Executive Director of the Cleveland and Northern Ohio chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Cleveland), together with Attorney Chance Zurub and Intern Shatha Shahin, attended the Senate Bill 83 Hearing held on May 24, 2023. The hearing focused on Senate Bill 83, also known as the “Ohio Higher Education Enhancement Act,” and its companion House Bill 151, which has raised concerns regarding academic freedoms and inclusion in higher education institutions.

Sponsored by Ohio Senator Jerry Cirino, Senate Bill 83 proposes various provisions that directly impact academic freedoms and instruction on “controversial beliefs and policies.” Notable provisions within the bill include the banning of mandatory diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training and programs, limitations on hiring and education surrounding “controversial beliefs and policies,” affinity groups, affirmative action practices, academic partnerships with China, and collective bargaining.

Representative Munira Abdullahi and Representative Mary Lightbody questioned the presenter of the bill and championed House Bill 171. Their efforts underscored the importance of fostering an inclusive and diverse educational environment that values different perspectives and promotes intellectual growth.

(CLEVELAND, OH – 5/19/2023) – The Cleveland and Northern Ohio Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) welcomed the grandson of the late Nelson Mandela, Chief Nkosi Zwelivelile Mandela to Cleveland State University. Chief Mandela is an elected member of the South African National Assembly representing the African National Congress.

As part of his U.S. tour to commemorate the 75th year since Al-Nakba, the U.S. Palestinian Community Network (USPCN) and the National Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression (NAARPR) along with the Cleveland & Northern Ohio Chapter of CAIR-Ohio, Cuyahoga Community College and the Palestinian Youth Movement arranged for Chief Mandela to speak on the connection between the apartheid struggle and Palestine, as well as the Black Liberation Movement. During his speech, Chief Mandela called for the end of imperialism and championed the cause of oppressed people everywhere.

Al-Nakba, also known as the Palestinian Catastrophe, was the forced removable of more than 800,000 Palestinians from their indigenous land on May 15, 1948. The displacement and subsequent massacres of the Palestinian people occurred on this day, made way for Zionist occupying forces to create what is now known as the state of Israel.

CAIR-Ohio, Cleveland & Northern Ohio Interim Executive Director Faten Odeh said, “My father was born in 1947 in Palestine. He is older than the state of Israel, so how can some say that the land of Palestine was a land without a people? This rhetoric of erasure is unacceptable. Just like the indigenous Native American population, we were there, we are still there, and we will not be erased.”

Odeh added, “The Council on American-Islamic Relations supports peace, justice and equality for all those living in the holy land and that means for Palestinians, too.”

The event was held in Berkman Auditorium and attracted attendees from Cincinnati, Cleveland, Youngstown and other neighboring cities.
