(CLEVELAND, OH, 5/5/16) – On Sunday May 8, the Cleveland chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Cleveland) will hold its 14th Annual Civil Rights Banquet, with the theme “Strengthening Our Voices: Advancing Together,” at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Independence.

At the event, CAIR will present the I-CAIR Moral Courage Award to former Cleveland City Councilman Joe Cimperman for authoring City Council Resolution 1459-15 in support of making Cleveland a welcoming city for Syrian, Iraqi and other refugees fleeing war and conflict. CAIR will also present its I-CAIR Human Rights award to LaTonya Goldsby, for her efforts to seek justice for her cousin, 12-year-old Tamir Rice, who was shot and killed by the Cleveland Division of Police outside a local recreation center in November 2014.

Banquet speakers include Sheikh Alaa Elsayed from the Islamic Centre of Canada and Alkauthar Institute and Murtaza Hussain, journalist and political commentator from The Intercept, the on-line news source founded by Glenn Greenwald who met with Edward Snowden in Hong Kong. The event will also feature a Mother’s Day Tribute and spoken-word poetry from Fatima Shendy.
