(CLEVELAND, OH, 8/23/23) – Ohio Issue 1 failed on Tuesday, August 8th, after voters went to the polls for the August Special Election. The Cleveland and Northern Ohio chapter of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) undertook an extensive campaign to inform and empower individuals in making an informed decision on Issue 1.
Under the leadership of Faten Odeh, Interim Executive Director of CAIR-Cleveland & Northern Ohio, and with the collective dedication of the organization’s members, CAIR-OHIO implemented a multifaceted strategy to educate and engage the community on Issue 1.
CAIR-Cleveland created an educational video urging people to vote “No” on August 8. It featured several languages including English, Arabic, Turkish, Somali, Korean, Hindi, Urdu, Mandarin, French, American Sign Language and Spanish. They also sent out WhatsApp messages and created social media posts on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to explain and remind people to vote.
Every Friday leading up to the election, CAIR-Cleveland set up informational tables at local mosques including the West Cleveland Muslim Association, Islamic Center of Cleveland and the Islamic Association of Akron and Kent where they were facilitating voter registration and providing comprehensive insights into Issue 1.
They also mailed more than 6.5 thousand Get-Out-the-Vote postcards urging individuals to participate in the Special Election on August 8th and make their voices heard.
