Staff Attorney, CAIR-Ohio, Cleveland Chapter

The Cleveland Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Ohio) is seeking a full-time or part-time Staff Attorney.

Job Description

Reporting to the Executive Director, the Staff Attorney will provide legal representation, advocacy, and support to individuals and communities facing discrimination and civil rights violations. The role involves direct client services, community education, and collaborative work with other CAIR-Ohio staff and partner organizations.

Legal Representation & Advocacy

  • Provide legal counsel and representation to clients in matters related to civil rights, employment discrimination, immigration, and other relevant areas.
  • Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, and represent clients in hearings and trials.
  • Collaborate with external legal partners and coalitions to advance strategic litigation and policy advocacy.
  • Conduct client intake interviews to assess legal issues and determine eligibility for services.
  • Collaborate with CAIR Leadership to engage in strategic research and solutions.

Community Outreach & Education 

  • Develop and deliver know-your-rights workshops and legal clinics for community members.
  • Build and maintain relationships with other legal service providers, bar associations, advocacy organizations and other legal advocacy groups to support collective action and community empowerment.
  • Advocate for policy changes at local, state, and federal levels to advance civil rights protections.
  • Work with CAIR-Ohio’s communication team to disseminate information on legal rights and resources.
  • Provide training and mentorship to CAIR legal interns and volunteers.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities, including attending relevant conferences and training sessions.

Organizational Support

  • Assist in the development and implementation of CAIR-Ohio’s strategic legal initiatives.
  • Participate in grant writing and reporting to secure funding for legal services and advocacy projects.
  • Contribute to the creation of educational materials and resources for the community and legal professionals.
  • Support CAIR-Ohio’s mission and vision through active engagement in local and national organizational events and campaigns.

Required Qualifications

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and admission to practice law in Ohio.
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of legal experience beyond law school in civil rights, immigration, or related legal fields.
  • Strong commitment to social justice, civil rights, and CAIR’s mission.
  • Excellent research, writing, and oral advocacy skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with discretion.
  • Eligible to work in the United States.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, dynamic environment.
  • Multilingual skills are a plus (in languages such as Arabic, Urdu, Uzbek, Somali, etc.).
  • Experience working with people from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • Mission-driven and self-directed.

Job Description

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Client Interaction:
    • Conducting client intake and keeping detailed and organized case logs.
    • Corresponding with clients and investigating their claims.
    • Keeping clients apprised of any developments with their cases.
    • Communicating with clients with consistency.
  • Case Management:
    • Maintaining accurate and thorough case records.
    • Obtaining detailed fact summaries of cases.
    • Ensuring timely filings.
    • Scheduling appointments.
    • Working with interns and clerks to provide a dynamic, immersive, and beneficial experience.
  • Administrative Support:
    • Providing ongoing administrative support for pending litigation, including document review, hearing and motion preparation, calendaring impending deadlines, and formatting litigation materials for court.
    • Receiving and making telephone calls.
    • Drafting and typing office and legal memos.
  • Document Preparation:
    • Formatting briefs for clean submissions.
    • Drafting, proofreading, and formatting legal documents, correspondence, and reports.
  • Legal Research:
    • Occasionally conducting legal research for the attorneys and providing substantive feedback.
  • EPIC Program Management:
    • Corresponding to letters from incarcerated communities and fulfilling religious accommodation requests.
  • Educational Outreach:
    • Participating in educational outreach pertaining to civil rights.

Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or equivalent in Legal Studies, Paralegal Studies, or a related field. Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • Previous experience as a legal assistant, paralegal, or in a related administrative role.(preferred)

    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and legal research tools.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Preparing accounting schedules, monthly financial statements and reports.
  • Managing account payable & receivable.
  • Completing monthly reconciliations of bank accounts.
  • Processing invoices and credit card charges.
  • Completing journal entries.
  • Collecting and coordinating tax return filing and financial audits.
  • Monitoring organization compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Working with CAIR-Cleveland Treasurer to review, create, and implement necessary finance policies and streamlined across four offices.
  • Other tasks related to finances as requested.

Skills and Experience

  • College degree (preferred).
  • Minimum of 3 years of bookkeeping/accounting experience.
  • Experience in the non-profit sector (preferred).
  • Proven mastery of QuickBooks (required)

Job Description

Performs a range of basic office support activities, such as answering phones and directing calls, greeting and directing visitors, answering questions and performing routine clerical, data entry, and/or word processing work as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Answers telephones, routes calls, takes messages, and provides general information; greets and directs visitors; answers routine inquiries; maintains log of inquiries as required
  • Opens and routes incoming mail; distributes correspondence and other material to staff.
  • Performs a variety of routine assignments as appropriate to the position; may operate a personal computer to draft basic correspondence, enter data, and print letters, labels, reports, and/or other materials; types and mails form letters.
  • Copies and/or duplicates materials as requested; may oversee day-to-day operation of copy machine; may prepare and transmit facsimiles.
