    CAIR-CLEVELAND REP ADDRESSES MUSLIM YOUTH CONFERENCE

    (CLEVELAND, OH, 5/31/2012) – A representative of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, Cleveland Chapter recently spoke at the American Muslim Youth Leadership (AMYL) Council’s first annual convention in Orlando, Florida over the Memorial Day weekend.

    The convention entitled, “Indeed You Have the Best of Manners” focused on Islamic perspectives for empowering youth and building tomorrow’s future leaders. CAIR Cleveland Executive Director Julia Shearson spoke on a variety of topics including Challenging Islamophobia; Building the Next Generation of Muslim Leaders; Women’s Rights in Islam; Role Models for Muslim Youth, etc.

    CAIR-OHIO OFFERS FORUM ON CHALLENGING ISLAMOPHOBIA

    (CLEVELAND, OH, 4/24/2012) – The Cleveland Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations recently presented a workshop on Challenging Islamophobia for students at John Carroll University.

    The workshop provided a brief overview Islamophobia, including the definition and key components; understanding the history and root causes; current manifestations on the Internet and in the public sphere; consequences of hate and bigotry; and how Islamophobia is promoted by religious figures, media pundits, politicians, and so-called “terrorism experts.” The workshop also offered practical steps and resources for reaching out to the Muslim community and challenging Islamophobia.

    “Religious intolerance has a negative impact on communities” said Julia A. Shearson, executive director of CAIR-Cleveland. “The workshop on Challenging Islamophobia is  designed to raise awareness about anti-Muslim bigotry and provide resources to counter intolerance by building mutual understanding and fostering inclusion.”

    CAIR-CLEVELAND JOINS FORUM ON ISLAM AT BALDWIN WALLACE COLLEGE

    (CLEVELAND, OH, 10/11/2010) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Cleveland Chapter recently joined a panel on understanding Islam and Muslims held at Baldwin Wallace College. The panel followed a screening of the film Inside Islam: What a Billion Muslims Really Think.

    The film and panel were part of a series of events held during Islamic Awareness Week sponsored by the Muslim Students Association on the Baldwin Wallace campus. The panel included a representative of CAIR and professors from the history and religion departments at Baldwin Wallace College.

    CHURCH HOSTS RAMADAN IFTAR WITH CLEVELAND AREA MUSLIMS

    Interfaith program counters Islamophobia stoked by controversy over NYC Islamic center

    (CLEVELAND, OH, 8/26/2010) – On August 26, the Cleveland Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-OHIO) co-hosted a Sharing Ramadan Interfaith Iftar event at the West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church in Rocky River.  The program was designed to promote interfaith harmony in light of the anti-Islamic rhetoric surrounding the New York City Islamic center expansion project near Ground Zero.

    Churches and synagogues in other parts of the country have hosted Ramadan Iftar events, but this was the first such event in the Cleveland area. Imam Ramez Islambouli of Case Western Reserve University and Uqbah Mosque Foundation spoke on the meaning of Ramadan.

    Dr. Mansoor Ahmed spoke on flood relief efforts in Pakistan. More than 150 guests shared a traditional Ramadan Iftar dinner and then stayed for an interfaith dialogue.

    “In the midst of the bigotry being stoked around the country against Muslims, it is comforting to know that here in Cuyahoga County, Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, and others are breaking bread in the spirit of friendship and mutual respect,” said Isam Zaiem, CAIR-Cleveland Board President.

    CAIR-OH PROVIDES TRAINING AT STATE CONFERENCE ON VICTIM ASSISTANCE

    (CLEVELAND, OH, 6/11/08) – The Cleveland chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Cleveland) recently gave a presentation at the Ohio Attorney General’s 2008 Conference on Victim Assistance, held in Akron, Ohio, on how to prevent and respond to domestic violence in the Muslim community.

    The statewide conference aims to provide training for those who assist victims in the aftermath of crime. CAIR’s training, which was part of a session entitled “Domestic Violence in Immigrant Homes,” offered tools and suggestions for helping victims and witness advocates optimize services for Muslim women.

    The presentation covered issues such as the impact of family violence on the Muslim community, challenges and barriers for advocates and victims, resources for combating domestic violence in Muslim communities, marriage and gender roles in Islam, the role of religious texts, and Islamic perspectives on healthy relationships.

    “Violence in the home is a serious public health and law enforcement problem that cuts across all demographic lines,” said CAIR-Cleveland Executive Director Julia Shearson, who gave the presentation. “The goal of our training is to break down barriers to effective treatment and prevention by offering law enforcement and social workers the tools to provide culturally aligned approaches to help stop domestic violence in diverse communities.”

    CAIR-OHIO PROVIDES TRAINING FOR MEDICAL INSURANCE STAFF

    (CLEVELAND, OH, 5/22/08) – The Cleveland chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-Cleveland) recently offered training for nurse case managers at Medical Mutual Company, Ohio’s oldest and largest health insurance provider, which is headquartered in Cleveland.

    The training, entitled “Optimizing Care for Muslim Patients and Clients,” offered information on what health care providers should know about Islam and Muslims, including basic beliefs and practices and tools and suggestions for interacting with Muslim patients and clients. The training offered an Islamic perspective on health and illness and covered topics such as patient-provider communication, modesty in the clinical setting, diet and hygiene, and end-of-life issues.

    “The goal of our training is to provide information and effective tools to help healthcare providers meet the needs of Muslim patients,” said CAIR-Cleveland Executive Director Julia Shearson. “A holistic health assessment takes into account cultural and religious beliefs, and by delivering culturally competent medical care, providers can help bring about the best possible health outcomes.”
