    MEDINA, Ohio – What is it like to be a Muslim woman in the United States?

    Julia Shearson, executive director of the Cleveland Chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), will share her perspective at a dinner and talk Sept. 28 at the A.I. Root Community Room, 623 Liberty St.

    Her talk is a program of the Medina County branch of the American Association of University Women.

    The evening will start with dinner at 6 p.m., followed by Shearson’s presentation at 7:15 p.m. Her talk is free and open to the public. The dinner, catered by Miss Molly’s Tea Room, is $19 per person.

    Shearson has headed the Cleveland chapter of CAIR, the largest Muslim civil rights advocacy organization in the United States, for 13 years.

    During that time, she has won awards and recognition for her work promoting diversity and mutual understanding.

    The AAUW works to advance equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, philanthropy and research.

    CAIR-Cleveland: Muslim Women Join Church Panel to Dispel Stereotypes of Women in Islam

    (Cleveland, OH, 4/19/16)  On Saturday, April 16, the Cleveland chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) joined the Inclusivity Ministry of the West Shore Unitarian Universalist Church in Rocky River, Ohio in hosting a presentation and panel discussion on Women in Islam.

    The event, which was attended by more than 70 people, was designed to help dispel stereotypes about Muslim women. The opening presentation provided a brief overview of women’s political, economic, and educational rights as well as an exploration of Quranic texts on the equality of women in Islam. The panel session covered hot button subjects such as modern gender roles, domestic violence, patriarchy and human rights in the Muslim world. Panel participants included seven Muslim women from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds and age groups in order to provide a range of perspectives. (more…)

    (CLEVELAND, OH, 2/2/2012) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Cleveland Chapter offered a training session today for spiritual care providers at the Hospice of the Western Reserve.

    The seminar entitled Optimizing Care for Patients and Clients provided a basic understanding of Islam and Muslims as well as details for interacting with Muslim patients and families in the hospice setting. The seminar covered issues such as the basic beliefs and practices; Islamic views on illness and death; palliative care for the Muslim patient; religious rituals; end of life issues; burial practices; organ donation, etc.

    CAIR-CLEVELAND OFFERS SEMINAR ON ISLAM AT SLOVENIAN SOCIAL HALL

    (CLEVELAND, OH, 10/13/2010) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Cleveland Chapter recently offered a presentation on Islam and Muslims held at the historic Slovenian Holmes Hall Pensioners Club in the Collinwood neighborhood of Cleveland, Ohio.

    The presentation, which was attended by more than 100 members of the Slovenian club, covered demographics of the Muslim community; basic beliefs and practices; myths and stereotypes about Islam and Muslims; similarities among the three Abrahamic faiths; as well as controversial subjects such as jihad and women in Islam. The presentation also covered the rise of Islamophobia in America.

    “Being hosted by Holmes Hall Pensioners Club was truly an honor,” CAIR Cleveland executive director Julia Shearson said. “Being able to share information across religious and cultural groups in a friendly environment with wonderful hospitality was a great experience.”

    (CLEVELAND, OH, 10/10/2010) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Cleveland Chapter joined an interreligious training session today for spiritual care volunteers at the Hospice of the Western Reserve.

    The panel was part of a comprehensive training program for spiritual care volunteers who serve at various hospice centers in Northern Ohio that are part of the Hospice of the Western Reserve. The panel covered issues related to death and dying from the perspective of different traditions such as Buddhism; Islam; Christianity; Judaism; Atheism and Humanism.     CAIR-OHIO JOINS DIVERSITY FORUM AT COUNTY JUSTICE CENTER      

    (CLEVELAND, OH, 9/30/2010) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Cleveland Chapter recently attended a diversity seminar for officials and staff at the Cuyahoga County Justice Center. The training was entitled Islam and the Justice System.

    The forum provided information on Muslim demographics; basic religious beliefs and practices; Islamic perspectives on justice; issues of religious accommodation and other topics of concern to justice system officials and staff.

    “We are glad to see the Justice Center is taking a pro-active approach in educating its staff on the diverse cultural and religious groups we have here in our County,” said Julia A. Shearson, executive director of CAIR-Cleveland. “Building understanding and mutual respect promotes a great working environment and helps ensure fair and just treatment for all who come in contact with the Justice Center.”

    CAIR-OHIO OFFERS DIVERSITY SEMINAR TO LUTHERAN CHAPLAINS 

    (CLEVELAND, OH, 4/26/2010) – The Council on American-Islamic Relations, Cleveland Chapter recently offered a diversity training seminar for members of the Lutheran Chaplaincy Services. The training, which took place at Christ the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Brecksville, Ohio, was entitled Optimizing Care for Muslim Patients and Clients.

    The two-hour training provided information on Muslim demographics; basic religious beliefs and practices; Islamic perspectives on health and illness; interacting with Muslim patients, Islamic views on end of life issues; palliative care for the Muslim patient; grief and bereavement, and other topics of concern to hospital chaplains and health care practitioners.

    “Health care providers increasingly agree that a holistic approach to patient care that takes cultural and religious background into consideration can help create positive outcomes for patients and their families,” said Julia A. Shearson, executive director of CAIR-Cleveland.
